Why We Became Meerkats
We chose Meerkats as our mascot because Meerkats live, work, and play together in loyal and mutually supportive communities. Every Meerkat has a job to do, and everyone must contribute and support the others in order for the colony to thrive. Every adult member of the colony has its own preferred job.
Including:
- Caregivers who stay close to the den with the young ones and keep them out of trouble while the rest of the colony is out hunting;
- Sentries scan the skyline for predators and stand up on their hind legs using their tails for balance and bark out warnings if they hear, smell, or see any predators. There are specialized calls for everything;
- Hunters who find food while the kids stay behind with a babysitter;
- Teachers go on-on-one with the juveniles to show them how to hunt.
The remarkable thing is that meerkats often rotate and share jobs, sacrificing individual preferences for the sake of other members of their community.
Kids, families, and teachers working together for each other -- what more could we ask for? These qualities reflect our values, and we are proud to have adopted the Meerkat as our school mascot.
